Why is the David the most recognizable symbol of Florence and what did he represent in his time?

How tall is the David? Here’s some basic information. This masterpiece by Michelangelo is 5.16 meters (almost 17 feet) and it’s made of a single block of marble from the quarries in Carrara in Tuscany. This incredible sculpture is located in the Accademia Gallery Museum of Florence, inside its specific Tribune: the one you will see in Piazza della Signoria is just a copy.

How did the genius of Michelangelo meet the challenge of extracting the pathos of a human challenging a cruel giant and fixing it forever in time? You will discover his art and techniques admiring the Slaves (“Prigioni”), who still seem to struggle free from their stone blocks.

Have a close encounter with these timeless works of art and get the inside story of the life and times of this consummate artist. The Accademia Gallery also houses an important collection of paintings from the 14th to the 16th century, plaster casts of famous statues dating back to the 19th century, and impressive holdings of Russian icons. Linger as long as you like; at the end of the tour, you are welcome to remain in the gallery on your own until closing time.

Masterpieces

In addition to the famous Michelangelo's masterpieces, the collection features also some Florentine paintings from the 13th century up to the 16th century, plasters by Lorenzo Bartolini and Luigi Pampaloni and a series of Russian icons. Moreover you can find a display of old musical instruments from the Medici and Lorraine families that was open in 2001.
